By the end of the program, students will...

1. Evaluate the development, philosophy, and historical perspectives of the counseling profession. (Competency 1, 5, & 7)
2. Evaluate the roles, responsibilities, and relationships of the professional counselor. (Competency 1)
3. Demonstrate ethical and legal decision-making, including regulatory processes and policies, in professional counseling across service delivery modalities and specialized practice areas. (Competency 1)
4. Demonstrate effective counseling practices that integrate the theories and strategies which are culturally-responsive, diverse, equitable, inclusive, and align with a social justice perspective to encourage client autonomy and agency. (Competency 2)
5. Evaluate the individual and systemic factors that influence/impact the development of the individual and relationships across the lifespan. (Competency 3)
6. Apply the theories and models of career development, counseling, and decision-making to strategies for advocating and facilitating client skill development and employment. (Competency 4)
7. Evaluate the interrelationships among and between work, socioeconomic standing, wellness, disability, trauma, relationships, and other life roles and factors. (Competency 4)
8. Develop a personal model of counseling grounded in theory and research that demonstrates self-awareness of values, strengths/limitations, biases, personality styles, reaction patterns, interpersonal styles, and a clarification of personal and professional self. (Competency 5)
9. Demonstrate effective counseling strategies, techniques, and clinical judgment used to facilitate the client change process across various situations and settings. (Competency 5, 6)
10. Demonstrate collaborative, culturally-responsive, and evidence-based strategies and techniques for building and maintaining the counseling relationship. (Competency 5, 6)
11. Demonstrate culturally-responsive and developmental considerations, which appraise individual and environmental characteristics, and systematic behavioral observations, during the assessment, diagnosis and intervention processes. (Competency 7)
12. Demonstrate culturally-sustaining and developmentally-responsive strategies for conducting, interpreting, and reporting the results of research and program evaluation. (Competency 7)
13. Demonstrate effective advocacy and decision-making skills based on culturally-sustaining, developmentally-relevant, and evidence-based outcomes to further support the client and/or counseling field/profession. (Competency 2, 8)
14. Demonstrate professional information management, communication skills, and technology usage according to the standards of the discipline. (Competency 5, 7)
