Pre-Occupational Therapy (OT) Program Information

Occupational therapists require master’s degrees. At Baker College, students must complete the Pre-Occupational Therapy program before entering the Master of Science in Occupational Therapy program. Occupational therapists provide therapeutic interventions to individuals across the lifespan. Interventions are designed to promote successful engagement in everyday activities (occupations). These include the skills necessary for learning, social interaction and recovery from emotional, physical and/or cognitive limitations.

This program is concerned with providing a practical education that will enable graduates to apply their skills to a diverse population in a variety of settings. The curriculum will provide students with early exposure to the occupational therapy profession and to those conceptual models that are applied by occupational therapists on a daily basis. The combined Pre-Occupational Therapy program and the Master of Occupational Therapy program are currently recognized as fully accredited by the Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education (ACOTE) of the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA) and can be reached by mail at: c/o Accreditation Department, American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA), 4720 Montgomery Lane, Suite 200, Bethesda, MD 20814-3449; (301) 652-AOTA; www.acoteonline.org.

Students must have successfully completed all Level I and Level II, clinical experiences, and have graduated from an accredited occupational therapy program to be eligible to sit for the national Occupational Therapist Registered Examination. States have licensure laws that occupational therapists must comply with to practice in that state. The accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education (ACOTE) and the American Occupational Therapy Association have mandated that all entry-level occupational therapists be prepared at the master degree level beginning January 2007. Therefore, all pre-occupational therapy students will be required to apply to the Baker College Center for Graduate Studies upon completion of the Pre-Occupational Therapy program. The Baker College Bachelor of Health Science and Master of Occupational Therapy programs are combined as a 4+2 degree program; students complete four years of undergraduate study and one year of graduate study. Graduate admission is open only to students who have completed the Pre-Occupational Therapy program at Baker College of Flint.

A felony conviction may affect a graduate’s ability to sit for the NBCOT examination or attain state licensure

Program Mission & Outcomes

  1. Upon passage of the national Occupational Therapist Registered (OTR) Examination, graduates seeking employment will obtain positions in or related to occupational therapy. At least 95% of all graduates will be employed as occupational therapists or in related positions within 90 days of eligibility.
  2. Utilize critical thinking skills to administer assessments in a uniform manner to ensure findings are valid and reliable (establish needs and priorities for intervention).
  3. Adjust/modify the assessment procedures based on client’s needs, behaviors, and culture (identify and design interventions).
  4. Establish accurate and appropriate treatment plans based on the evaluation results, through integrating multiple factors such as client’s priorities, context(s), theories, and evidence-based practice.
  5. Implement intervention plans that are client-centered.
  6. Satisfactorily produce the volume of work (treatment, documentation, and administrative duties) required in the expected time frame.
  7. Clearly and effectively communicate verbally and nonverbally with clients, families, significant others, colleagues, service providers, and the public (responsibilities as a professional).
  8. Demonstrate consistent work behaviors including initiative, preparedness, dependability, and work site maintenance.
  9. Demonstrate problem solving and critical thinking skills by adhering to ethics of the profession, safety regulations, and judgment in safety in regard to self and others during all fieldwork II- related activities (manage OT services and advance effectiveness).
  10. Collectively score at or above 80% for the Occupational Therapists Registered (OTR) Examination annually.
  11. Demonstrate an appreciation for the complexity of context and diversity (including but not limited to socio-economics, culture, gender, race/ethnicity, religion, disabling conditions, and sexual orientation) on engagement in occupation.

Full acceptance into the professional track of some programs is limited due to clinical or work site availability. Students compete to earn acceptance into these programs. All students having successfully completed the conditional acceptance requirements, are eligible to apply. Admittance criteria for all limited enrollment health science programs features a common set of prerequisite courses prior to acceptance to their selected program. Students have the opportunity to apply to multiple limited enrollment programs due to the common set of required courses used for the selection process.

Students may attempt to earn a seat in a Limited Enrollment program up to two times. An attempt is defined as having completed all prerequisite coursework at or above the minimum grade required, completed the entrance exam, but were not awarded a seat due to their standing and limited seat capacity. Students reapplying must complete the program reapplication process including submitting a new application.

Note:  If you are a new transfer student or currently completing a required course at another institution, you must request an Official Transcript be sent to Baker College.  Your Official Transcript must be received by 5:00 pm the last Friday of the semester.  If you have previously provided your Official Transcript, you do not need to supply it again.
